US Strikes Houthi Sites In Yemen For The Fifth Time As Fight Escalates

The U.S. attacked Houthi weapons sites for the fifth time in one week, this time striking two anti-ship missile sites, The New York Times reported, citing two U.S. military officials.

U.S. surveillance aircraft detected the Houthis preparing missile launchers to attack commercial vessels and Navy ships in the Red Sea, prompting a preemptive operation against the sites, the U.S. officials told the NYT on condition of anonymity to discuss operational matters. Since a U.S.-led coalition bombarded missile launchers, weapons depots and radars in Yemen on Jan. 11, the U.S. has conducted several independent preemptive attacks meant to immediately disrupt planned attacks on international shipping as tensions throughout the region spike.

Wednesday night, U.S. warships and submarines fired Tomahawk missiles on 14 targets in Yemen where the Houthi rebels were preparing missiles to launch further attacks on international shipping, destroying the sites, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement.

“These missiles on launch rails presented an imminent threat to merchant vessels and U.S. Navy ships in the region and could have been fired at any time, prompting U.S. forces to exercise their inherent right and obligation to defend themselves. These strikes, along with other actions we have taken, will degrade the Houthi’s capabilities to continue their reckless attacks,” CENTCOM said of the Wednesday strikes.

CENTCOM did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment on the latest operation.

The Pentagon insisted Wednesday that the conflict between Israel and Hamas has not expanded throughout the region as violence escalated following U.S.-led strikes on Houthi positions in Yemen and retaliatory attacks on a U.S.-flagged merchant ship.

“We are going to continue to work with our partners in the region to prevent those attacks or deter those attacks in the future, and we’re also going to continue to work very hard to prevent the Israel Hamas conflict from escalating into a broader regional conflict,” Pentagon press secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said Wednesday. “We currently assess that the fight between Israel and Hamas continues to remain contained in Gaza,” he added.

A multi-nation operation led by the U.S. launched expansive strikes with aircraft, warships and submarines on munitions depots and launch sites for weapons the Houthis have used to target international shipping in the Red Sea on Jan. 12. More than 150 different types of munitions bombarded more than 60 targets at 28 locations, Pentagon officials have said.

On Wednesday, an explosive-laden drone struck and sparked a fire aboard the Marshall Islands-flagged Genco Picardy, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said, marking the fourth reported incident since the U.S.-led strikes on targets in Yemen.

The Iran- backed group had expanded the scope of targets to include U.S.-owned and operated commercial vessels while already aiming at Israel-linked vessels, according to Reuters.

The Houthis have ignored the Biden administration’s repeated warnings against continuing to conduct attacks on international shipping in a critical sea lane, now numbering more than 35 since October, according to the NYT.

  1. Come on now, US led coalition ?? Really? This is purely a show by the Biden administration to prop up his image as a Commander in Chief!!! Nothing more. Do we really need a coalition? Do we really need an entire Naval group in addition to a ship or two from England, Holland and whatever other nation makes up this US led coalition battle group. The photo shows a missle being fired from a sub, to me a sub, and some drones being flown from an aircraft carrier is all we should need!! What’s the overkill all about other then making it appear that the threat is bigger then what it is, so like Biden’s new immigration enforcement, we now have Biden showing he’s a war time president. It’s a Joke people, why isn’t it being reported that way. They’re a bunch of rebels being supplied by Iran with homemade missles and drones and we need a complete Naval battle group out there while the few other nations have one ship donated to the coalition. Again Republicans allow the Democrats to pull the veil over the eyes of the people of the United States by using this as a show and tell moment. Smoke and mirrors and no one brings it up. Lastly when was the last time there was strife in the Middle East where the price of oil and subsequently gas went down? How about NEVER!!! Gas here in NYC is under $3 a gallon?? How bout that? Open your eyes America!! It’s all I can say, risking American military lives just for President Dopey Joe’s Show and Don’t tell for the American people.
