Gillibrand: ‘First Thing We Should Do’ Is Abolish Ice When Dems Take Back Congress
The “first thing” Democrats should do if they flip the House and Senate is to “get rid of” Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY.) on Sunday.
“So when we flip the House and flip the Senate, I the first thing we should do is deal with the children who are being separated from their families at the border,” Gillibrand said while attending New York City’s OZY Fest. We should… I think we should get rid of ICE,” added Gillibrand.
Gillibrand continued, “We should separate out the two missions. And do the anti-terrorism mission, the national security mission. And then on the other side, make sure you’re doing… looking at immigration as a humanitarian issue. These are civil issues, these are families.”
Gillibrand joins her fellow colleagues Kamala Harris (D-CA.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA.), who have all called for abolishing ICE. Warren has called for ICE to be replaced with something that reflects our morality and that works. “The president’s deeply immoral actions have made it obvious — we need to rebuild our immigration system from top to bottom, starting by replacing ICE with something that reflects our morality and that works,” said Warren.
The calls for abolishing ICE began when Democrat socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez pulled off a shocking primary win against prominent Democrat Joe Crawley (D-NY.) in New York’s 14th Congressional district. Calling to abolish ICE was part of the platform Ocasio-Cortez ran on.
