California goes full-on in the anti-gun race with new ammunition and magazine initiative

Voters could stop the insanity proposed by California progressives. But, if history is an indicator, this will pass without difficulty.

FIREARMS. AMMUNITION SALES. INITIATIVE STATUTE. Prohibits possession of large-capacity ammunition magazines, and requires their disposal by sale to dealer, destruction, or removal from state. Requires most individuals to pass background check and obtain Department of Justice authorization to purchase ammunition. Requires most ammunition sales be made through licensed ammunition vendors and reported to Department of Justice. Requires lost or stolen firearms and ammunition be reported to law enforcement. Prohibits persons convicted of stealing a firearm from possessing firearms. Establishes new procedures for enforcing laws prohibiting firearm possession by felons and violent criminals. Requires Department of Justice to provide information about prohibited persons to federal National Instant Criminal Background Check System.

California is set to require its residents to pass a background check in order to purchase ammunition. That will effectively eliminate online purchases and make in-person purchases much more costly.

The proposal also makes the possession of large capacity magazines illegal. In past initiatives, anyone currently owning a restricted item was allowed to keep it but could not purchase more.

This proposed law also requires ammunition purchases to be registered with state authorities. It is well known that registration is simply the precursor to confiscation.

The proposal started in October 2015 when California Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom then proposed background checks for ammunition:

“Why is it that we have background checks for guns but not background checks for ammunition? It makes no sense,” Mr. Newsom said at his press conference in San Francisco.

“California can set the tone for the rest of the nation with these common-sense public safety provisions,” he said. “We will lead the nation. We’ll be the only state in America that has background checks on point-of-sale purchases of ammunition.”
