Birmingham, Alabama Mayor Randall L. Woodfin was hospitalized Monday night due to coronavirus-related pneumonia, the city said in a statement to the Daily Caller News Foundation.

“Birmingham Mayor Randall L. Woodfin was admitted to a hospital tonight to address symptoms connected to COVID pneumonia, according to his doctor,” the Monday statement said. “Mayor Woodfin said he is receiving excellent care and is resting comfortably. He remains in good spirits and thanks everyone for their well wishes.”

Pneumonia is listed as one “of the most common complications of severe COVID-19,” the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) website said.

Woodfin was recuperating at his home on Dec. 30 following his diagnosis, the city said in a December statement provided to the DCNF.

“Mayor Woodfin went in for a test this afternoon and received his results this evening. He is working from home, still handling matters of the city. He will continue to self-quarantine,” the statement said.

“COVID-19 has made its way to my doorstep. I’ve tested positive, but my symptoms are currently mild,’’ Woodfin said in the statement. “Everyone, please remember that COVID is real. Please be safe and protect yourselves and your loved ones.”
