Mission Impossible wows in theaters amidst a sea of sequels

Mission Impossible: Fallout topped movie theater ticket sales this week continuing a trend where sequels hold the top spots at the box office.

Tom Cruise in ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ shows that the world accepted its mission to make the sixth installment of the beloved action franchise a massive hit taking in $153.5 million in 37 global territories including North America where it also topped the chart with a $61.5 million debut,” comScore’s Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian commented.

Mama Mia! Here We Go Again, The Equilizer 2,  and Hotel Transylvania 3 took second, third and fourth in the U.S. Fallout, the sixth movie in the Mission Impossible franchise, also topped global ticket sales. Domestic entertainment has been dominated by sequels this year as Hollywood struggles to find original storylines. 9 of the top 12 movies in U.S. theaters were either sequels or prequels to an existing franchise.
