Woman to Be on U.S. Currency in 2020
Times they are a changin’ so move over Alexander Hamilton the $10 bill will be changing too:
On Wednesday, U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said a woman will be featured on a redesigned $10 bill in 2020 — the 100th anniversary of the Constitution’s 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote.
Women’s suffrage is well worth celebrating. The push for women to vote was a hard struggle and certainly an historic accomplishment. To honor this legendary anniversary, the treasury department will turn to … social media:
The department will launch a website, and is asking for input over social media with the hashtag #TheNew10.
What’s his criteria? Lew wants the next generation of U.S. currency to underscore the theme of American democracy. The portrait must also — by law — be of someone who is no longer living.
With all the hints given the choices are somewhat narrowed. We need a dead women that is viewed as a leader. Here’s a list of leaders of the Women’s suffrage movement as some possible candidates:
