The Republicans had a great deal for people affected by the coronavirus that would stimulate the economy and help people and businesses affected by it, but the House democrats voted it down in a surprising move on Sunday night. President Trump expressed his disappointment at his daily press conference on Monday with the Task Force and said it was a great bill and didn’t think the democrats would vote it down and hoped they would come to an agreement on a bill to help the country and people.
After three days of bipartisan negotiations, Senate Democrats suddenly decided to block the CARES Act on a procedural vote The deal began to unravel when Nancy Pelosi announced that she would not accept the Senate bill and planned to write a House Democrat plan for Phase 3 coronavirus relief. An infuriated Mitch McConnell ripped Democrats for pulling a last-minute partisan stunt while Americans desperately need relief, and markets need a show of confidence
Even The New York Times leaves no doubt as to which party made the move, and which party risks getting blamed for the fallout saying:
“SENATE DEMOCRATS ON WEDNESDAY BLOCKED ACTION ON AN EMERGING DEAL TO PROP UP AN ECONOMY DEVASTATED BY THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC, PARALYZING THE PROGRESS OF A NEARLY $2 TRILLION GOVERNMENT RESCUE PACKAGE THEY SAID FAILED TO ADEQUATELY PROTECT WORKERS OR IMPOSE STRICT ENOUGH RESTRICTIONS ON BAILEd OUT BUSINESSES.
THE PARTY-LINE VOTE WAS A STUNNING SETBACK AFTER THREE DAYS OF FAST-PACED NEGOTIATIONS BETWEEN SENATORS AND ADMINISTRATION OFFICIALS TO REACH A BIPARTISAN COMPROMISE ON LEGISLATION THAT IS EXPECTED TO BE THE LARGEST ECONOMIC STIMULUS PACKAGE IN AMERICAN HISTORY — NOW EXPECTED TO COST $1.8 TRILLION OR MORE. IN A 47-TO-47 VOTE, THE SENATE FELL SHORT OF THE 60 VOTES THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN NEEDED TO ADVANCE THE MEASURE, EVEN AS TALKS CONTINUED BETWEEN BEHIND THE SCENES BETWEEN DEMOCRATS AND THE WHITE HOUSE TO SALVAGE A COMPROMISE.
THE FAILURE TO MOVE FORWARD SHOOK FINANCIAL MARKETS AND THREATENED AN AMBITIOUS TIMELINE SET BY THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION AND LEADING REPUBLICANS TO MOVE THE RESCUE PACKAGE THROUGH THE SENATE ON MONDAY AND ENACT IT WITHIN DAYS.
IN VOTING TO BLOCK ACTION, DEMOCRATS RISKED A POLITICAL BACKLASH IF THEY ARE SEEN AS OBSTRUCTING PROGRESS ON A MEASURE THAT IS WIDELY REGARDED AS CRUCIAL TO AID DESPERATE AMERICANS AND PROP UP A FLAGGING ECONOMY.”
“Speaker Pelosi unveiled legislation aimed at exploiting the COVID-19 public health crisis by attempting to force the inclusion of a socialist wish list of policies that have nothing to do with the public health and economic emergency,” said House Minority Whip Steve Scalise, Louisiana Republican.
After poring over the 1,400-page proposal, Mr. Scalise offered his characterization of Republicans’ objections to the following items:
Under the heading of “Union Giveaways”:
Under the heading “Green New Deal priorities”:
Under “Student Loan Forgiveness”:
Under “Federalizing Elections”:
*Would allow certain funding to go to sanctuary cities.
• Virtually rewrites the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program policy with no reference to COVID-19 and permanently disallows rulemaking pertaining to work requirements and eligibility
Mr. Scalise said the Democrats’ bill also excludes bipartisan health-care provision in the Senate bill, including a proposal to expand telehealth access for home dialysis patients, hospice and home health patients; and a measure to prevent a payment reduction for durable medical equipment to help patients’ better transition from the hospital to home.
“Instead of working in a bipartisan, bicameral way to provide this immediate relief, the speaker has proposed legislation that includes highly partisan provisions while excluding key patient care provisions that would have a real impact on Americans affected by COVID-19,” Mr. Scalise told his Republican Colleagues.
This is all their Green New Deal pushed into a Corona Virus bill that was to boost the economy and help people affected by the virus. Instead, Dems showed once again that they could care less about the people and only about themselves. They are truly worse than the virus itself. The GOP can go forward and say to the American people you all will suffer now because Pelosi wants to put all kinds of non-Coronavirus BS in this bill. She doesn’t care for you. This is not a game. People’s lives are at stake If that’s the way they want to go then maybe no deal is better than a bad deal.
