Five Uses of Azee 500 mg

Short for Azithromycin, Azee 500 mg is a potent antibacterial drug that is used to treat a variety of infections. This 15-atom lactone macrolide ring compound is derived from erythromycin. It is slightly less effective than erythromycin against streptococci and staphylococci but somewhat more active against H.influenzae. However, Azee 500mg is highly active against Chlamydia sp.

Azithromycin penetrates deep into the tissues as well as the phagocytic cells and slowly gets released to produce an elimination half-life which is close to three days. Due to this, the dosage is required to be taken only once a day and for a shorter period of time. Therefore a single dose of Azee 500mg is as effective as a seven-day course of doxycycline. Azithromycin is well tolerated and gets absorbed readily.

The drug is available in the market as Zithromax, Z-Pak or Zmax. Azee 500mg is administered in a variety of diseases including pneumonia. Since it does not belong to the penicillin family, there aren’t complications such as gastrointestinal side-effects that accompany penicillin family drugs.

Five uses of Azee 500 mg are:-

1. Ear Infection– Azee 500 mg is prescribed in case of ear infection especially in diseases such as infection of the middle ear by S. pneumoniae bacteria. It is effective in such bacterial infections. Although azithromycin is not a harmful drug, it should not be taken without first consulting the doctor.

A new clinical study shows that azithromycin’s single dose is as effective as clavulanate potassium /amoxicillin( Augmentin), taken twice a day for ten days, in treating acute otitis in children. Azee 500mg is a well-tolerated drug with very few children (17% of the sample size) experiencing any discomfort or treatment-related issues during the study.

Acute otitis is the inflammation and infection of the middle ear. It is often due to some bacterial infection. It is one of the most common infections in children, other than a cough and cold. Ear infections such as acute otitis can often lead to hearing loss or impairing speech or language skills.

It shows that the potency of azithromycin is higher than many of the drugs already available in the market for treating bacterial infections. Where the previously used drugs had to be taken for no less than seven days with multiple intakse during a single day, Azee 500mg is generally taken for no more than 5 days in a row with a single dosage every day. Oral Azithromycin can be used by both children and adults.

2. Throat infection- For throat infections such as Strep infection, Tonsillitis, Streptococcal pharyngitis and Gonorrhea Infection of the Throat, Azee 500mg (Azithromycin) is prescribed by the doctor. In this infection too, azithromycin is given for a five day treatment course.

Azithromycin is highly effective against streptococcal species (including Group A Strep). A number of respiratory infections are treated with the use of Azee 500mg. For children, the course is a three-day course, and for adults, it is a five-day course.

The drug azithromycin is highly effective, but its irresponsible use can lead to development of the drug resistance bacteria which are also known as superbugs- the treatment of which becomes impossible with the drug being currently used because of mutations in the bacteria leading to its resistance to the drug.

Azithromycin has limited use in treating strep throat, especially Group A Strep because of macrolide-resistance in this group of bacteria. Unrestricted use and exploitation of the drug can lead to such mutations in other bacteria too, in which case a new line of drugs would be required to treat these diseases and infections.

3. Tonsils- Bacterial tonsillitis and pharyngitis are caused due to inflammation (by bacteria) of tonsils and pharynx respectively. If they occur simultaneously, the condition is known as tonsillopharyngitis. In such a condition, the doctor can prescribe Azee 500 mg to be administered daily for a three-day or a five-day course to subside the infection. It is generally recommended in pediatric cases than for adults.

It is well known that tonsillitis as a condition causes a great deal of discomfort and pain as it obstructs the airway causing it difficult to breathe, eat and drink. Gram-positive bacteria- Group A beta-hemolytic streptococci, is the most common bacteria which causes tonsillopharyngeal infections. However, it is important to verify whether the condition is due to viral infection or bacterial infection.

4. Skin and soft tissue infection– In common bacterial skin infections, Azee 500mg is generally recommended by the doctors. Its efficacy in treating acute skin infections was proved recently when a research was conducted in 42 patients for five days who were administered one dose of the drug every day. It proved to be more effective than other antibiotic drugs which were given for a prolonged period of eight to ten days for the same infection.

There is a steep rise in various types of bacterial skin infections. One of the skin diseases that has spread all over the world is cellulitis. It is caused by Strep which is a bacterial group. To treat this disease, Azee 500mg is administered by doctors. It is an effective antibiotic for strep infections. It is safer than the widely used clindamycin. TMP-SMX and Clindamycin should be reserved for draining wounds or treating abscesses.

5. Genital diseases and sexually transmitted infections– For sexually transmitted diseases and genital diseases such as Chlamydia, Trachomatis, and other common infections of female pelvic organs, Acute Gonorrhea of the urethra, Mycoplasma Hominis Infection of the female genitals, Gonorrhea of the Rectum, Azee 500mg is administered to the patient. It provides relief from these bacterial diseases. It is a prescription only drug and can be taken orally, in liquid form or injected in the body.

In the case of Gonorrhea, Azee 500mg is given to the patient and it needs to be taken once every day for the prescribed time period. Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted disease that affects both women and men. It spreads through the exchange of bodily fluids. Antibiotics are necessary to treat and cure Gonorrhea. The medicine should eliminate the infection within two weeks of time, but it should be continued unto the entire duration of prescription.

Azithromycin or Azee 500mg can be clubbed along with other medicines like doxycycline which is to be taken in the manner prescribed by the doctor.

Like any other drug, Azee 500mg should be administered to the patient with caution. Allergic reaction to azithromycin is rare. But if one is allergic to antibiotics such as erythromycin, telithromycin or clarithromycin, it should be brought to the notice of the doctor. Also, medical history, especially if suffering from chronic diseases or surgeries undergone should be told to the doctor.

The side-effects, if any, of Azee 500mg such as nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, vomiting, eye problems, muscle weakness, signs of liver problems etc. should be brought to the notice of the doctor immediately. The intake of the drug should be halted immediately.

Drug interactions can change their composition and effect on the human body. Therefore certain drugs should be avoided being taken together. Antibiotics generally do not produce an ill effect when taken with other antibiotics and hormonal drugs (birth control pills). But the drug itself could affect the heart rhythm, the prolongation of which can lead to irregular or fast heartbeat, dizziness, fainting and heart failure (if you have certain medical conditions). It is, otherwise safe to take.
