Remember the whole blue/black or white/gold dress thing? Well, social media’s newest sensory debate involves what you hear instead of what you see.
A recording uploaded to Instagram asks listeners whether they hear Yanny or Laurel. It then took off after it was picked up on Reddit and then retweeted across Twitter.
The New York Times traced the recording to a Roland Szabo, a Georgia high school student who while working on a school project tripped across the audio.
Mr. Szabo said that he was working some time ago on a school project and recorded the voice from a vocabulary website playing through the speakers on his computer. People in the room disagreed about what they were hearing.
That disagreement flowed onto the internet as everyone disagreed on whether they heard Yanny or Laurel – except one person:
