Trump: ‘Caravan is largely broken up’

President Donald Trump said Thursday that the army of prospective illegal aliens, called “the caravan” by mainstream media, has been undone by Mexican authorities.

“The Caravan is largely broken up thanks to the strong immigration laws of Mexico and their willingness to use them so as not to cause a giant scene at our Border,” the president tweeted. “Because of the Trump Administrations actions, Border crossings are at a still UNACCEPTABLE 46 year low. Stop drugs!”

“The president was clear that this caravan needed to be stopped before it arrived at our southern border, and his efforts now appear to be successful,” Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a statement released by the Justice Department. “We will not accept the lawlessness of these types of efforts and those who choose to violate our laws, and those who conspire to assist others to violate our laws, will face criminal prosecution.” Indicating that the Justice Department may go after Pueblo Sin Fronteras (Town Without Borders), who organized and promoted the planned illegal incursion, for conspiring to break U.S. law.

NBC News put a different spin on the demise of the planned border invasion.

“After Trump’s tweets threw unprecedented attention to the caravans, the organizers of Pueblo Sin Fronteras had to rethink how to help migrants,” the news organization posted on Twitter.

If by “rethink how to help migrants,” NBC means “surrender them to Mexican authorities” that story is roughly accurate.

Organizers had originally made bold claims that they would take the 1,500-strong group of invaders to the U.S. to either demand asylum or outright evade U.S. law enforcement.

Buzzfeed started the media frenzy over the marchers when it posted an article on March 31 titled “A Huge Caravan Of Central Americans Is Headed For The US, And No One In Mexico Dares To Stop Them,” except … someone dared.

On Wednesday, despite confirmation by Mexican officials that they would break up “the caravan” PSF activist Alex Mensing defiantly tweeted “the caravan isn’t over.”

But on Thursday morning, PSF relented.

“Our job with the caravan ends in Mexico City,” the organization’s director Irineo Mujica told The Washington Post. That’s far short of their goal of making the U.S. border as a publicity stunt.

Now, President Donald Trump has issued an executive memo that allows the use of the National Guard to support operations on the U.S.-Mexico border, a move Attorney General Jeff Sessions “fully supports.”

“I will soon be announcing additional Department of Justice initiatives to restore legality to the southern border,” Sessions said.
