The government of Pakistan held a high-level security meeting Tuesday in response to President Donald Trump‘s threat to end financial aid to the middle-east nation.
“The United States has foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies & deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools,” Trump tweeted Monday. “They give safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help. No more!”
Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Pakistan’s prime minister, called a meeting of the National Security Committee (NSC) on Tuesday to discuss the future course of action.
Pakistan’s foreign minister hit back at Trump.
“Trump is disappointed at the US defeat in Afghanistan and that is the only reason he is flinging accusations at Pakistan,” Khawaja Asif told the Pakistani TV network Geo on Monday. “We have already told the US that we will not do more, so Trump’s ‘no more’ does not hold any importance.”
The Trump administration has been withholding $255 in military aid since August over what it says is Pakistan’s failure to crack down on terrorists.
“We are prepared to partner with Pakistan to defeat terrorist organizations seeking safe havens, but Pakistan must demonstrate its desire to partner with us,” Secretary of State Rex Tillerson wrote in late December.
