FDA announces slew of food safety recalls

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced this weekend a huge set of recalls involving salads, vegetables, pharmaceuticals, and seafood.

Beginning on Friday, the FDA announced that salads that are sold by the pound at Whole Foods and vegetables sold in trays and cups at Albertsons, Safeway, and Pak’N Save were likely contaminated with Listeria.

This recall impacts only the products in the stores and states listed below. The products have Sell Thru Dates up to and including 10-24-17 (October 24, 2017) and are packaged in clear plastic trays and cups of various sizes. The UPC code and Sell Thru Date can be found on the store scale label.

Food recall 10-21

The government agency also warned consumers that salad and basil products made by BrightFarms were possibly contaminated with E. Coli.

The BrightFarms recall includes the below salad products packaged in clear, plastic clamshells with best by dates located on the label of the package: 10/24/2017, 10/25/2017, 10/26/2017, 10/27/2017.

  • BrightFarms Baby Spinach (4 oz. and 8 oz. package)
  • BrightFarms Spring Mix (4 oz. and 8 oz. package)
  • BrightFarms Spinach Blend (4 oz. package)
  • BrightFarms Baby Greens Blend (4 oz. and 8 oz. package)
  • BrightFarms Baby Kale (3 oz. package)
  • BrightFarms Baby Arugula (4 oz. package)
  • BrightFarms Baby Romaine Mix (4 oz. package)

Basil products, packaged in clear plastic clamshells with best by dates located on the label of the package: 10/24/2017, 10/25/2017, 10/26/2017, 10/27/2017.

  • BrightFarms Thai Basil (.75 oz. package)
  • BrightFarms Lemon Basil (.75 oz. package)

The oversight agency ramped up the recalls on Saturday as they warned consumers that Charlie’s Produce, Alaska Carrot, CP Fresh, Meijer and Ready. Chef. Go! products sold at Randalls, Tom Thumb and Albertsons were also likely contaminated with listeria. Earthbound farms was also listed, but for undeclared milk and egg ingredients that would only cause harm to those allergic to them.

The following recalled products were distributed in state of Alaska through retail store delis.

“Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” the FDA said in a statement. “Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”

The recall affects the following products sold in Meijer stores in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin purchased September 27, 2017 through October 20, 2017. The items will be in plastic containers or foam trays with printed labels with various sizes and weights.
