Trendsetting San Francisco 49ers Have NFL’s First Lesbian Coach

The NFL’s San Francisco 49ers are looking to bolster their credibility as an inclusive organization this year after the Colin Kaepernick debacle.

The team finished with a putrid 2-14 record last year while their famous former quarterback pulled his national anthem stunts, praised Fidel Castro and attracted a media circus on a weekly basis.

A common misperception is that the 49ers dumped Kaepernick over his toxic anti-Americanism but that is not the case. Kaepernick himself chose to opt-out of his contract in order to strike it rich in the free agent market. That didn’t turn out so well, did it?

With the 2017 season opener less than three weeks away, it is likely that the team is looking for some positive news to disperse the toxic cloud left behind by Kaepernick and as such, becomes the first NFL team to have a lesbian coach.

Via Out Sports “San Francisco 49ers assistant Katie Sowers is first out LGBT coach in NFL”:

San Francisco 49ers assistant coach Katie Sowers is a pro football pioneer. This season, she will become the NFL’s second full-time assistant female coach. She will also become the league’s first openly LGBT coach, male or female.

“No matter what you do in life, one of the most important things is to be true to who you are,” Sowers, openly lesbian, told Outsports when asked why she is discussing her sexual orientation publicly for the first time. “There are so many people who identify as LGBT in the NFL, as in any business, that do not feel comfortable being public about their sexual orientation.

“The more we can create an environment that welcomes all types of people, no matter their race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, the more we can help ease the pain and burden that many carry every day.”

Sowers is the first openly LGBT coach not only in the NFL, but in male pro team sports. She is the second woman to be an assistant NFL coach, joining Kathryn Smith, who was on the Buffalo Bills staff in 2016.

The 49ers did not hire Sowers, 31, to be an offensive assistant working with wide receivers because she is a woman or gay. They hired her because of her football background and to help make them a better team.

This move – however well-intentioned – may not play out as expected and will quite possibly blow up in the faces of 49er brass by calling attention to Ms. Sowers being the ONLY openly LGBT coach in the NFL as well as ONLY one of two females.

The feminists are going to go be furious that women are underrepresented on coaching staffs, in front offices and yes, even on the field.

Now that a white player has joined the growing national anthem protests which will continue to multiply and turn off fans sick of mixing sports and politics, the league may have another identity politics fiasco on its hands that could lead to LGBT+ and feminist boycotts as well.

I guess that I’m showing my age but I remember when the NFL was really about the games on the field than off field pandering to certain demographics. I guess that I’m just from the old school which in these sick and tormented times would have me labeled as a Nazi or something.

The NFL may about to get a lesson in the law of unintended consequences.
