Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Found to Contain Traces of Weed Killer

Vermont hippie ice cream empire Ben & Jerry’s which last year added a flavor to honor Bernie Sanders to their product line, is taking a public relations hit after traces of a weed killer were reportedly found in samples of their delightful frozen treats.

The company is well known for the promotion of liberalism and in addition to “Bernie’s Yearning” also featured politically-themed “Empower Mint” in 2016.

But despite the leftist rhetoric and promoting itself as being against GMO ingredients, elements of Monsanto’s Roundup weed killer were discovered by The Organic Consumers Association, skewering the claim that Ben & Jerry’s ice cream is made out of only natural ingredients.

Ben & Jerry’s, which has marketed itself as a non-GMO company for years, is now under fire after its ice cream tested positive for a chemical used to kill weeds.

The Organic Consumers Association (OCA) found that 10 out of 11 samples tested positive for glyphosate, the key ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide.

Lab testing found traces of glyphosate in the following flavors: Peanut Butter Cup, Peanut Butter Cookie, Vanilla (2 samples), Cherry Garcia, Phish Food, The Tonight Dough, Half Baked, Chocolate Fudge Brownie, Americone Dream and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. Cherry Garcia was the only flavor that tested negative for the chemical.

Although the levels are far below the legal limit set by the Environmental Protection Agency, the Organic Consumers Association is demanding that the company either transition to using only organic ingredients or stop advertising their products as “natural.”

“It’s time for Ben & Jerry’s to announce it will immediately begin transitioning to 100-percent organic,” the OCA wrote on its website. “Otherwise conscious consumers have no choice but to launch a national and, if necessary, international protest campaign and boycott.”

While the herbicide levels are not toxic per EPA standards, it does seem like a bit of a case of false advertising here on behalf of the company.

Ben & Jerry’s quickly announced that they would be transitioning to total organic after being busted by the OCA which is probably more out of concern over a boycott than anything else.

Hey, I must admit that I occasionally have a sweet tooth and enjoy some Ben & Jerry’s treats now and then.

Despite the loathsome nature of the namesakes of some of the products like “Stephen Colbert’s Americone Dream” which is self-explanatory and “Cherry Garcia”, named after the drug-addled Grateful Dead guitarist, they are actually two of this humble author’s personal favorites.

What I can’t stomach though is the liberal hypocrisy of the two founders and their pursuit of zany politics, especially the dyed in the wool commie Bernie Sanders. That alone should be enough reason to boycott.
