John McCain sided with an unconfirmed and widely disputed Washington Post story alleging that President Trump gave highly-classified information to the Russians.
“Reports that this information was provided by a U.S. ally and shared without its knowledge sends a troubling signal to America’s allies and partners around the world and may impair their willingness to share intelligence with us in the future,” Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain, R-Ariz., said in a statement Tuesday.
McCain could have backed National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster, NSC Deputy Dina Powell or Secretary Rex Tillerson, who were all in the meeting and have since gone on the record to refute the WaPo story as “false.” Instead, the anti-Trump senator took the side of a report that has no named sources and comes from a liberal news outlet.
John McCain has been an ardent critic of the president from the beginning. Just recently, a top Democrat praised the Republican senator for his opposition to Trump that mirrors the Democrat party’s “resistance” strategy.
After the WaPo story was released, the paper’s newsroom erupted in cheers. Now McCain appears to be taking a victory lap of his own.
