Congressional Democrats are threatening to shut down the government to continue their war on President Trump’s agenda.
Shuttering all non-critical functions of the government is a drastic measure typically used by the minority party as the only way to shape policy.
Senior senate democrats wrote a letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Appropriations Committee Chairman Thad Cochran that said, “We believe it would be inappropriate to insist on the inclusion of such funding in a must-pass appropriations bill that is needed for the Republican majority in control of the Congress to avert a government shutdown so early in President Trump’s Administration.”
Democrats are positioning themselves to hold up an April funding bill in order to stop Trump’s border wall, removal of funding for planned parenthood, funding for more immigration and border patrol agents, and a roll-back of Obama’s onerous environmental policies.
“They [republicans] should not include poison pill riders such as those that roll back protections for our veterans, environment, consumers, and workers and prohibit funds for critical healthcare services for women through Planned Parenthood,” the Democrats wrote. “We strongly oppose the inclusion of such riders in any of the must-pass appropriations bills that fund the government.”
