Southwest Florida Teacher Reassigned After Pro-Deportation Post
An elementary school teacher in Collier County, Florida has been reassigned to administrative duties pending an investigation into a post she put on Facebook.
Veronica Fleming’s post, now deleted, reads “The funny thing about immigrants staying home is the rest of us who pay for them are at work like we’ve always been. Looks like less mouths to feed today. Have fun while you still can. So glad to hear about massive deportation. Let’s make America great again. Thanks Donald Trump!!”
Fleming’s reassignment came after the school started receiving calls from parents angry about the posts. The principal escalated the incident to the superintendent and human resources where the decision was made to pull her from her teaching duties.
Veronica teaches at Parkside Elementary which has a student population that is 96% immigrant and heavily latino. Figures for the mix of illegal vs. legal immigrants were not immediately available.
A petition to fire Ms. Fleming has been circulated and is estimated to have over 3,000 signatures at this time.
