Dem-Linked Dark Money Group Sees Trump Indictment As The ‘Perfect Opportunity’ To Trash Republicans

Media Matters for America chair David Brock’s organization Facts First USA is calling for allies to rhetorically attack House Republicans in light of former President Donald Trump’s recent indictment and any others that could be approaching, according to a Tuesday memo reported by Politico.

Trump pleaded not guilty to all 34 counts of falsifying business records in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s indictment, related to allegations that he reimbursed his former lawyer Michael Cohen for hush money paid to porn star Stormy Daniels over an alleged affair she had with Trump. The former president is also under multiple federal investigations and a Fulton County, Georgia, probe related to the 2020 election, and the Fact First USA memo from Brock deems this moment “a perfect opportunity to further tie House Republicans to the MAGA extremists of their party.”

“The Trump indictment(s) ultimately stand as an indictment of House Republicans and their efforts to shield Trump and other lawbreakers, including those within their own conference,” the memo says. It suggests focusing on several messages in Trump indictment discussions, including “sham” investigations by House Republicans like Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan and Oversight Committee Chair Jim Comer into liberal district attorneys, accusing Republicans of saying Trump “should not be held accountable for his criminal conduct” and arguing that protecting Trump was key to Kevin McCarthy’s “corrupt bargain to become Speaker.”

Comer called Bragg’s investigation of Trump “a political stunt” in late March, and Jordan subpoenaed former New York County Special District Attorney Mark Pomerantz last week, alleging he politicized the probe and encouraged Bragg to charge the former president. McCarthy declared Tuesday that Congress would Bragg accountable, saying he had engaged in “weaponization of the federal justice process.”

“As House Republicans continue to ignore the issues they promised Americans during the 2022 midterms they would focus on, they have taken a further leap away from the responsibilities that come with governing by siding with criminals,” Fact First USA’s memo says. “The MAGA extremists who command Speaker McCarthy’s every move have visited insurrectionists, attacked law enforcement, and maneuver to aid lawbreakers.”
