One of America’s Most Radical Leftists About to Face Recall

Kshama Sawant, a Seattle city councilwoman and member of Socialist Alternative, a far-left, Trotskyist political party, faces a recall election on Dec. 7.

Ryan Mills of National Review reported Wednesday:

Just weeks after Seattle voters rejected a slate of hard-left progressive candidates for mayor, city council, and city attorney, residents of the city’s most liberal district will have the opportunity to boot one of the country’s most radical elected officials from office.

Mail ballots for the recall of Kshama Sawant, Seattle’s open Marxist city councilwoman, have been sent to the roughly 76,000 voters in the city’s third district ahead of the December 7 election.

In Washington, politicians can only be recalled for “malfeasance, misfeasance, or violation of their oath of office.” Because of that, the organizers of the recall, which has been approved by the courts, are focusing on three charges against Sawant.

Sawant has been accused of using her position on the city council to mobilize anti-police radicalism during last summer’s wave of (often violent) demonstrations in large cities following the murder of George Floyd. Last June, in defiance of COVID-19 lockdown orders in place at the time, Sawant used her key to Seattle’s City Hall to let in over 1,000 far-left protesters.

Later that month, she helped lead activists to the home of Mayor Jenny Durkan, whose address is protected by Washington’s Address Confidentiality Program.

Finally, in May, Sawant agreed to pay a $3,500 fine for using city funds to promote her ballot initiative to institute a payroll tax, which included over $1,700 spent on the creation of “Tax Amazon” campaign materials.

“Councilmember Kshama Sawant has used her position in violation of the law or has recklessly undermined the safety of others, all for political theatre,” the recall’s official website claims.

Sawant, true to form, blames racism and the far right for the recall, which is stated to be apolitical and is backed by open Democrats.

“This recall is part of a racist, right-wing backlash nationally against Black Lives Matter. Contrary to recall lies, I did not break the law,” Sawant said, according to FOX 13 Seattle.

Recall proponents, however, beg to differ. Recall campaign director Henry Bridger II told National Review that the effort to remove avowed Marxist Sawant from office is “not about her ideologies.”

“District 3 is the most liberal district in Seattle, and Seattle is one of the most liberal cities in the nation,” Bridger continued. “We are not focusing on ideologies. I hold some of those ideologies. So, it’s not about who she is, where she’s from, her skin color, her sex, or anything. It’s clearly holding a politician accountable for breaking the law.”
