President Donald Trump announced Thursday that the Republican National Convention in Jacksonville, Florida, has been canceled out of an abundance of caution.
“It’s time to cancel the Jacksonville, Florida, component of the GOP convention,” the president said in a news conference. “We’ll be starting North Carolina for the Monday as has always been planned.”
GOP delegates will go to North Carolina and vote on the Republican nominee for president.
Trump also said that they will be doing “tele-rallies” and “other things” to “protect the American people.” The president said that keeping American citizens safe has always been his highest concern.
The cancellation comes amid a flare-up of Coronavirus infections in Florida and concern of additional spread at large events.
