Democrats spent their first day as majority by doing useless stuff

Nancy Pelosi got her gavel back, Democrats became the majority party in the U.S. House of Representatives and all they did with it was pass doomed funding measures and introduce two equally worthless amendments to the U.S. Constitution.

First, the House passed a budget package that would fund several government agencies through the end of fiscal year 2019 and fund Homeland Security through Feb. 8. Both measures are missing the border wall funds the president has requested. As such, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has vowed not to put anything up for a vote that the president and Democrats have not already agreed upon. Should the package somehow get through the Senate, the White House said today that such bills would likely be vetoed by Trump.

Trump and members of his administration have made clear that the only way he will approve a funding package is if it has money for the wall. Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats have decided to play politics by passing a doomed funding package all for the sake of political optics. But wait… it gets worse.

Late Thursday, Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN-09) introduced two Constitutional Amendments that have zero chance of being approved by the Senate or the states.

The first proposed change to the Constitution would eliminate the Electoral College. The president and vice president would be decided by popular vote which would lean races overwhelmingly towards urban population centers (New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Miami, etc.)

“In two presidential elections since 2000, including the most recent one in which Hillary Clinton won 2.8 million more votes than her opponent, the winner of the popular vote did not win the election because of the distorting effect of the outdated Electoral College,” Cohen said in a statement. “Americans expect and deserve the winner of the popular vote to win office.”

The second proposed amendment would limit the power of Presidential pardons. Cohen’s change would not allow the president to pardon himself, members of his family, people in his administration or campaign staff.

“Presidents should not pardon themselves, their families, their administration or campaign staff,” Cohen said. “This constitutional amendment would expressly prohibit this and any future president, from abusing the pardon power.”

Under Nancy Pelosi’s first day of leadership, Democrats accomplished exactly nothing – a likely foreshadowing of the next two years.
