Quick and Simple Guide to Junkyards

Do you have a junk car on your hands? Are you thinking of selling your junk car for cash? If so, you might be considering a few different options. You could try selling your junk car to a dealership or a private buyer. Some people opt to go this route. Generally, though, it ends up being a waste of time. Dealerships don’t generally buy junk cars, and most private buyers are only interested in vehicles that are in decent shape.

It’s generally much faster (and more profitable) to sell your junk car to a junkyard. But what is a junkyard exactly? How do they work? And how can you get the maximum amount of cash when selling your vehicle to a junkyard? Keep reading to find out.

What Is a Junkyard?

Junkyards are where old, broken down vehicles are taken when they’re no longer serviceable. These junk cars are sometimes set out “pick and pull” style, where individuals can come to the junkyard, pay an entrance fee, and take whatever parts they need from the vehicles in the yard. However, many junkyards will remove parts themselves to sell. Once the valuable parts have been removed from a vehicle, it’s then crushed, shredded, and sorted into scrap metal. This scrap is later melted down for use in industry, including in the production of new cars.  Junkyards are often placed far outside of a city center. Sometimes when junkyards are placed too close to a downtown area the community reacts.

Who Are Junkyards For?

There are two typical situations where you might need to work with a local junkyard.

On the one hand, the need to fix up your vehicle could land you at a junkyard in your area. Junkyards often have inexpensive used auto parts available, and it’s not uncommon for people to source the parts they need for their vehicle from a local junkyard.

In other cases, though, you may end up working with a junkyard when the time comes to sell your old junk car. Most junkyards will pay you a fixed price based on the weight of your vehicle, which can make selling a junk car to a scrap yard much easier (and even more profitable) than trying to find a private buyer.

How Do You Sell a Junk Car for cash to a Junkyard?

Are you looking to sell your junk car to a junkyard? If so, here are a few things to consider.

First, it’s important to be sure that you’ve taken all of your personal belongings out of the vehicle. Once you’ve signed over your title to the junkyard, they’ll likely crush your vehicle and turn it into scrap metal. So, you won’t have another opportunity to retrieve your things.

Next, be sure you have a clear title. Most junkyards won’t be able to purchase your junk car unless the title can be signed over to them.

Lastly, be sure you’re working with a reputable junkyard. Unfortunately, there are a lot of scam artists out there. Some junkyards will try to give you as little cash as possible for your vehicle, while others will offer you one price over the phone and then change the amount at the last moment.
