Liberal Billionaire Tom Steyer Donates Another $10 Million To Trump Impeachment Efforts

by Hanna Bogorowski

Billionaire hedge fund manager Tom Steyer is hoping an additional donation of $10 million to two of his organizations, ones with goals to impeach President Donald Trump, will help flip the House in favor of the Democrats in November.

Steyer made his announcement Monday in a livestream for participants of his Need to Impeach organization, which claims on its website to have nearly 6 million voters signed on as of press time.

This $10 million donation will add to the $110 million he has already pledged ahead of November’s elections, Bloomberg reports.

Steyer’s donations make him a big player in the Democratic political sphere, and if he can garner lethargic voting cohorts to head to the polls this fall, he hopes the likelihood of a Trump impeachment will be higher.

In a statement provided to CBS News, Steyer deemed the donation a part of a “Need to Vote” campaign that will allocate the money to run digital and letter-writing initiatives, as well as TV ads and events Steyer will attend through the fall.

Along with Need to Impeach, Steyer also started the organization NextGen America, and both attempt to get younger people and older white women, specifically, to the polls, the report states.

Steyer’s calls to impeach Trump have drawn criticism from several Democratic lawmakers, including Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who said impeachment would be a “gift” to Republicans in a July Rolling Stone interview.

In an interview with BuzzFeed News on Sunday, Steyer said Pelosi is wrong for thinking an impeachment would hurt his party.

“If you step back for one second and think about this president, the most corrupt president in American history — somebody who is breaking the law on a daily basis, somebody who is reckless and dangerous and lawless,” he said.

Steyer’s organizations point out a Quinnipiac University poll that reveals 65 percent of Democrats want to see Trump impeached, but the same poll says only 39 percent of overall voters want an impeachment.

The Republican National Committee (RNC) responded to Steyer’s large donation, saying, “Democrats need a positive message, not a liberal billionaire wasting millions more on something even Nancy Pelosi calls a ‘distraction,’” RNC spokesman Michael Ahrens told The Daily Caller News Foundation.

Steyer is also rumored to be setting up a 2020 presidential run as he becomes one of the largest donors to the party, and didn’t say no when asked multiple times if he would run in Sunday’s interview.

“Are you running for president?” BuzzFeed’s Audie Cornish asked.

Steyer wouldn’t say yes or no, but instead gave a vague push for the continued efforts of his grassroots organizations.

“Election day is November 6, 2018. We are totally focused between now and November 6th on the outcome then,” he said.

Cornish pushed the issue, asking why someone with enough money and resources after a presidency like Trump’s wouldn’t run for office.

“Why not you?” she asked.

“I think the actual question that I ask is different from that. I ask what can I do? I will definitely be working full time the day after this election for social justice,” Steyer responded.

NextGen America did not immediately respond to The Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
