The father of a fallen Marine was surprised on Tuesday with the long-awaited return of his son’s American flag that was stolen from him earlier in the year.
Shawn Marceau went to visit his son Joe’s final resting place in Tahoma Cemetery in Yakima, Washington as he does every Tuesday. When he arrived at the gravesite, the missing flag was folded and resting on the headstone.
Marine Lance Cpl. Joe Jackson was killed in the Helmand province of Afghanistan while conducting combat operations in 2011. The flag was signed by Jackson’s platoon and was hanging over his bed before his final patrol, according to Stars And Stripes.
“There’s no rhyme, no reason, no nothing. It’s just a random act of kindness in this crazy world we live in right now,” Marceau said to The Yakima Herald. “Somebody finally did something to restore our faith in humanity a little bit.”
The flag was stolen, along with various other items, when someone broke into Marceau’s truck in April. At the time, he urged the public to help him find the flag and suggested looking in pawn shops or second-hand stores.
“I’ve had family looking around, I’ve had friends looking around, I had so many people looking around,” Marceau continued. “It’s a miracle. It’s an awesome miracle.”
