Family Research Council: Justice Kennedy’s Retirement will Turbocharge Evangelical Vote

“Justice Kennedy’s retirement will turbocharge this fall’s election,” said Family Research Council President Tony Perkins in a recent press release:

“Following a series of 5-4 decisions regarding such fundamental freedoms as religious freedom and speech, today’s announcement of Justice Kennedy’s retirement will turbocharge this fall’s election.”

Perkins further suggested that the American people are looking for another Supreme Court nominee in the mold of Justice Scalia and said this opportunity gives voters a reason to engage in this election cycle:

“In a closely divided U.S. Senate, every vote matters.   If values voters needed a reason to engage in this election cycle – they certainly have it now.  The American people are looking for yet another Supreme Court nominee in the mold of Justice Scalia as President Trump promised and delivered in Justice Gorsuch.”

Perkins continued adding that he was confident the president will choose a justice who decided the case before them as the Constitution intends:

“We are confident the president will choose a justice who simply decides the cases before them, as the Constitution intends,” concluded Perkins.

Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, also commented on the retirement of Justice Kennedy adding it is another opportunity for President Trump:

“Justice Kennedy’s retirement is another opportunity for President Trump to nominate a constitutional conservative to the bench who will honor the Constitution and the rule of law. President Trump should put forward another nominee who has a demonstrated record of applying the rule of law rather than legislating from the bench.

Fitton further called on the U.S. Senate to work with President Trump to approve a justice who will apply the U.S. Constitution as written:

“And the U.S. Senate should move quickly to work with President Trump to consider and approve a new justice who will apply the U.S. Constitution as written and understood by our Founding Fathers,” said Fitton.
