‘Star Wars’ and ‘Jumanji’ top the box office; ‘The Post’ bombed

Star Wars: The Last Jedi took remained at the top of the domestic and global box office totals for a second week bringing in $143.6 million over the weekend. Jumanji took the number two spot with an $83.5 million dollar haul, according to the official worldwide weekend box office estimates for the weekend of December 24, 2017 compiled by Comscore’s theatrical measurement services.

Notably missing from either top 12 list is The Post, a movie about the publication of the “Pentagon Papers” at the Washington Post. Actor Tom Hanks said last week that he wouldn’t screen it at the White House, a thinly-veiled insult of the president. Unfortunately for Mr. Hanks, it looks like it won’t be screening anywhere before much longer. The film performed so poorly that comScore’s official release didn’t even contain its earnings. BoxOfficeMojo.com did, however, publish the figures. The movie sold $158,122 worth of tickets on its opening day and a grand total of $495,000 for the entire weekend – disappointing figures for a movie that cost over $50 million to make.

comScore’s Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian commented, “Disney’s ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ leads the global box office for the second straight week taking in $143.6 million in 55 territories including North America where it added another $68.5 million.  This brings its North American total to $365.1 million and combined with the international revenues of $380.3 million, the worldwide cumulative is propelled to a massive $745.4 million.”
