The Republican election machinery has come back to Alabama in-support of U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore according to an NBC News correspondent.
“RNC is back in Alabama,” Vaughn Hillyard tweeted. “Two weeks after cancelling its joint fundraising agreement with the Moore campaign, the RNC has recommitted its efforts on behcalf of Roy Moore & will begin injecting money back into the state. This decision follows Trump’s endorsement today.”
So what brought the RNC back into the Alabama race just hours after President Donald Trump threw his support behind the embattled candidate? This GOP is all Trump’s.
“As an RNC committeeman told me this spring after Trump’s inauguration, it’s now the president’s Republican Party,” Hillyard tweeted afterward.
Moore holds a 2.5-point lead in the Real Clear Politics 10-day moving average of polls and a six-point lead in the latest polls and it appears that Republicans want to make sure to hold this seat as they are likely to tackle votes on immigration, infrastructure, spending, and more.
Earlier, MSNBC correspondent Garret Haake reported that Sen. Jeff Flake wasn’t happy about Moore’s expected win (go figure.)
“Retiring senator @JeffFlake sounding very disappointed in @realDonaldTrump endorsement: ‘We are going to have a tough enough time in the coming years. Being the party of Roy Moore isn’t going to help.'”
The comment echoes comments Flake shared with Republican Mesa, Arizona Mayor John Giles last month when the Senator said: “If we become the party of Roy Moore and Donald Trump, we are toast.”
Giles shared his dislike of Trump with Flake while pushing the retiring Senator to seek the presidency in 2020.
“Think how much fun it would be just to be the foil, you know, and point out what an idiot this guy is,” Giles said.
Senate Majority Leaders Mitch McConnell backed Moore’s opponent, Luther Strange, in the primary.
