It was a weekend to forget for the reigning MLB champion Chicago Cubs who dropped both games on the left coast to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Cubs could have been expected to struggle in the opener following a grueling series against the Washington Nationals that culminated in winning an elimination game on Thursday.
The prize? A coast-to-coast trip and a matchup with Dodgers superstar pitcher Clayton Kershaw. The Cubs lost that one 5-2.
The managed to fare slightly better on Sunday night, going into the bottom of the ninth tied at 1 apiece but ended up giving up a two-out walk-off-homer to Dodgers slugger Justin Turner.
It was 29 years ago that Kirk Gibson hit his famous homer that will live eternally in the lore of Dodgerdom, just as Turner’s will if the Dodgers manage to make it to the World Series and win.
Chavez Ravine erupted and now the series will shift back to the cozy confines of Wrigley Field for at least two games (three if the Cubs can win at least one of the next two) where they should be greeted by a boisterous home crowd.
Game Three is scheduled for Tuesday at 9 pm ET.
