NFL Commissioner Calls for Fans to be Understanding of National Anthem Protests

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is like King Canute trying to hold back the tides as the wave of racial protests threatens to swamp the league by the time the first real kickoff in three weeks.

It was an ominous weekend for the National Football League even if it was still only the first week of the preseason.

The national anthem protests what have rendered former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick radioactive are continuing and with the shift of the left’s strategy away from attacking President Trump as a Putin puppet to just a racist again, the NFL is likely heading for a moment of reckoning very soon.

At least that is what one can interpret from Commissioner Roger Goodell who saw his failure to appropriately deal with Kaepernick a year ago and put out the dumpster fire before it really started burn him badly with bad publicity, protests, and plummeting television ratings.

The first weekend’s games saw two players in Oakland’s Marshawn Lynch and Seattle’s Michael Bennett refuse to stand for the national anthem. They didn’t even kneel, they just sat on their asses and in the case of Lynch, he ate a banana.

Goodell seems to be running up the white flag of surrender and trying to get out in front of the coming nightmare when a considerable number of black players will make a huge political statement.

According to the New York Daily News “Roger Goodell says NFL fans should be more understanding of protests during national anthem”:

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says football fans should be more understanding when players protest the national anthem.

During a Q&A session with Cardinals season-ticket holders, Goodell was asked if he believes protests are “going to be another problem” this season.

This past weekend, Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch and Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett both sat down while the national anthem was played before their preseason games.

“It’s one of those things where we have to understand that there are people who have different viewpoints,” Goodell said via ESPN. “It’s something that I think everybody wants. The national anthem is a special moment for me. It’s a point of pride. That is a really important moment but we also have to understand the other side – that people do have rights, and we want to respect those.”

It’s pretty obvious that Goodell already can hear the coming train wreck in what may end up being his swan song as commish.

The league has invested a lot of resources into presenting itself as a patriotic organization over the years and has seen it all go up in smoke due to a small amount of oppressed multi-millionaires rallying around a locker room pariah as if he was Mohandas f*cking Gandhi.

There is going to be an immense backlash coming if enough black players choose to go rogue with some sort of ugly protest, strike or statement that further rubs raw the sores of racial discontent – or more precisely, rubs salt into the already raw sores that exist because of Kaepernick’s recalcitrance and Goodell’s incompetence.

This is not a good sign for either Goodell nor the NFL. A serious uprising by black players in support of Kaepernick and egged on the by the ongoing phony media narrative that Presiden Trump is responsible for all racism in the U.S.A. has the potential to be catastrophic for Goodell.

Even a fan of four decades such as myself has to admit that I am growing very tired of this idiocy and hockey season can’t get here soon enough.
