President Donald Trump announced Wednesday morning that the U.S. Government will no longer allow transgender individuals into the military.
“After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military,” Trump posted to Twitter. “Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you.”
The announcement, made in a series of four Twitter posts, was immediately condemned by activists and liberal politicians.
The media jumped on the announcement during Wednesday’s White House press briefing while completely ignoring Trump’s donation of $100,000 to education.
Reporters repeatedly asked White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders how the president could turn his back on the LGBT community after saying during the campaign that he would fight for them.
“This was a military decision,” Sanders responded. “This is about unit cohesion, resources within the military, and nothing more.”
What effect the president’s announcement will have on transgender people already in the military has not been announced.
The president’s announcement does not affect gays and lesbians in the armed forces.
