The Baltimore Orioles went down in an ugly fashion again on Friday, surrendering fifteen runs to the Tampa Bay Rays.
The 15-5 score was an indication of just how poorly that Baltimore’s pitching has been the year.
In fact, its’ been historically awful.
The latest bludgeoning of Orioles pitchers tied a 93-year-old record for most consecutive games where a team has given up five or more runs at 20.
The dubious feat was last accomplished by the 1924 Philadelphia Phillies and could be broken today when the O’s take the field behind right-hander Dylan Bundy at Tropicana Field.
According to Fox Sports “Orioles pitch themselves into the MLB record book for all the wrong reasons”:
The Orioles entered the record book Friday, but did so begrudgingly. For the 20th consecutive game, they allowed at least five runs – matching a mark set by the 1924 Phillies.
And there wasn’t much drama in this one, as the Rays scored five runs by the second inning in their 15-5 victory over the O’s. It was the third straight loss for Baltimore, which fell to a season-worst three games under .500 at 35-38.
The Orioles were a playoff team last year but are currently mired in last place in the American League East.
They can thank their pitching for the dismal beginning but are remarkably only six games out of first place and it’s still June.
