Rep. Jason Chaffetz will not run for re-election in 2018

House Oversight and Government Reform committee chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) announced Wednesday morning that he will not be seeking re-election in the 2018 midterm elections.

“After long consultation with my family and prayerful consideration, I have decided I will not be a candidate for any office in 2018,” began the official statement released on Chaffetz’ facebook page.

The congressman said that health nor politics played a part in his decision to leave congress. “I am confident I would continue to be re-elected by large margins. I have the full support of Speaker Ryan to continue as Chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee. That said, I have made a personal decision to return to the private sector.”

While he did say that he won’t run for political office in 2018, Chaffetz did leave the door open for a future political campaign and some speculate that he could be setting up a run for Utah governor.

Rep. Chaffetz had presided over high-visibility cases on the Oversight committee as Benghazi and the IRS’ targeting of conservative groups.
