President Trump Meets with Rep. Cummings to Discuss Prescription Drug Prices

President Donald J. Trump met with Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-MD) Wednesday in the Oval Office to discuss rising prescription drug prices.

Rep. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, and Rep. Peter Welch (D-VT), a senior Democrat on the Oversight Committee and the Committee on Energy and Commerce, met with President Donald J. Trump and presented him with draft legislation to allow the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to negotiate lower prices for prescription drugs under Medicare—a proposal that the President said he backs and that the American people overwhelmingly support.

President Trump expressed his desire to work with Congressman Cummings in a bipartisan fashion to ensure prescription drug prices are more affordable for all Americans, especially those who need lifesaving prescription medications.

Along with Medicare drug price negotiations, the president believes that reforming the Food and Drug Administration and reducing the regulatory burdens on drug manufacturers will enhance competition and help accomplish those goals.

This meeting was a result of a January telephone conversation, during which Congressman Cummings said that he and the President, had more in common than differences.
