USDA closes offices in 5 states due to threats

The Agriculture Department said Tuesday it had closed offices in five states after receiving anonymous threats.

A USDA spokesman said in a statement that the department had received “several anonymous messages” Monday  the safety of USDA personnel and facilities. Six offices were closed Tuesday morning and will remain shut  until further notice.

According to The Associated Press, the closed facilities are in Fort Collins, Colorado; Hamden, Connecticut; Beltsville, Maryland; Raleigh, North Carolina; Kearneysville, West Virginia; and Leetown, West Virginia.

The USDA has not given specifics about the threats other than that they were of a “serious nature.”

According to USDA spokesman Matthew Herrick, they is working with the F.B.I. to investigate the threats.

“Personnel at these locations have been made aware of the threats and will not report to these offices until further notice,” Herrick said in his statement.
