Melee Shuts Down MI Housing Line
Taylor Michigan: What began as an orderly line to receive housing vouchers in Taylor, Michigan erupted into violence causing the program to be halted by officials. The initial line began Friday evening and was filled with low income, elderly, and disabled residents hoping to receive one of the 1,000 vouchers. According to reports about 6 a.m. the group was impacted by a much more disorderly crowd of up to 4,000 who tried to push their way to the front. As hostilities erupted the HUD representatives shut the doors and stopped the program. Additional police were called in to disperse the mob. Some in line blamed the crowd itself while others blamed the officials. A representative from the Taylor Housing Commission said that a similar event was held in 2009 with far less attendees.
It is noteworthy with the second Obama term beginning next week that in many parts of the country life for the poor has not improved. Instead, for many, life is more difficult.
