NFL Commissioner Calls for Fans to be Understanding of National Anthem Protests

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is like King Canute trying to hold back the tides as the wave of racial protests threatens to swamp the league by the time the first real kickoff in three weeks.

It was an ominous weekend for the National Football League even if it was still only the first week of the preseason.

The national anthem protests what have rendered former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick radioactive are continuing and with the shift of the left’s strategy away from attacking President Trump as a Putin puppet to just a racist again, the NFL is likely heading for a moment of reckoning very soon.

At least that is what one can interpret from Commissioner Roger Goodell who saw his failure to appropriately deal with Kaepernick a year ago and put out the dumpster fire before it really started burn him badly with bad publicity, protests, and plummeting television ratings.

The first weekend’s games saw two players in Oakland’s Marshawn Lynch and Seattle’s Michael Bennett refuse to stand for the national anthem. They didn’t even kneel, they just sat on their asses and in the case of Lynch, he ate a banana.

Goodell seems to be running up the white flag of surrender and trying to get out in front of the coming nightmare when a considerable number of black players will make a huge political statement.

According to the New York Daily News “Roger Goodell says NFL fans should be more understanding of protests during national anthem”:

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says football fans should be more understanding when players protest the national anthem.

During a Q&A session with Cardinals season-ticket holders, Goodell was asked if he believes protests are “going to be another problem” this season.

This past weekend, Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch and Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett both sat down while the national anthem was played before their preseason games.

“It’s one of those things where we have to understand that there are people who have different viewpoints,” Goodell said via ESPN. “It’s something that I think everybody wants. The national anthem is a special moment for me. It’s a point of pride. That is a really important moment but we also have to understand the other side – that people do have rights, and we want to respect those.”

It’s pretty obvious that Goodell already can hear the coming train wreck in what may end up being his swan song as commish.

The league has invested a lot of resources into presenting itself as a patriotic organization over the years and has seen it all go up in smoke due to a small amount of oppressed multi-millionaires rallying around a locker room pariah as if he was Mohandas f*cking Gandhi.

There is going to be an immense backlash coming if enough black players choose to go rogue with some sort of ugly protest, strike or statement that further rubs raw the sores of racial discontent – or more precisely, rubs salt into the already raw sores that exist because of Kaepernick’s recalcitrance and Goodell’s incompetence.

This is not a good sign for either Goodell nor the NFL. A serious uprising by black players in support of Kaepernick and egged on the by the ongoing phony media narrative that Presiden Trump is responsible for all racism in the U.S.A. has the potential to be catastrophic for Goodell.

Even a fan of four decades such as myself has to admit that I am growing very tired of this idiocy and hockey season can’t get here soon enough.

  1. You want understanding, understand this: I, and hopefully anyone else, will not support the NFL, on site or on TV, who wants us to be understanding of players who cannot show respect for our Country. The Country which which makes it possible for them, and its owners, to make millions playing a game. In addition, if you choose them over playing the National Anthem, your done.

    1. So Roger Goodell wants to blame the FANS? HaHa.. I’ll just work Suduko and Crossword puzzles..
No time for and don’t need anymore whining rich babies in my life.

  2. I spent 28 years in the military so people could have their freedom and live in a free country. These “protesters” have no respect for those of us who has provided that freedom. Instead of them sitting on their money bags maybe they should stand up like men and do their protest in a positive way. Until then I will again boycott the NFL for this season. I wonder how understanding the NFL commissioner will be if no one tunes in on TV or no one shows up on the stands. I hate to say this guys but the NFL thinks it is ok to dump shit on the fans and not lose anything because of it. Fans, time to show the NFL who they exist for, the fans…..Goodell you are an idiot! Now you let these players disrespect the people and country that gave them their high paying careers. NFL is dead to me now. I hope the owners and coaches have the balls to do the RIGHT thing! Bench them, cut them, until they show respect whether they agree or not. Protesting should be done on their OWN free time. Finding the right platform. NOT ON NATIONAL TV! So piss off all you that have no respect for our great country. God Bless America!I Until then I will again boycott the NFL for this season.

  3. Absolutely disgusting, if these guys want to demonstrate then they can do it in private or on their own time, take a knee in the freaking dressing room, you are paid to do your job, not to express your opinions during work hours. Mandate that if anyone wants to take a knee then please do some in the dressing rooms, there is no reason for them to do this publicly.

Reality is clear, the people in the stands are paying to see a football game not your political agenda, keep your shit to yourself, if these guys do it during their “work hours” then they should be fined or fired for insubordination.

  4. I quit watching NFL when this first began. Too much money for the pro’s to screw it all up with childish tantrums on the field! Politics DOES NOT BELONG IN THE NFL! Fine the hell out of them, sit them on the bench or fire their ass’s, then I will pay attention to football again. It was an “Escape from Politics” until the children took over!

  5. Goodell’s beans and jerkies have been burning for too long already.

The NFL is the AMERICAN’s Football…100% !!! That includes all the pomp and circumstance that goes with it from OUR Nation Anthem as a show of gratitude for our freedoms and those who fought to make it possible….It is “We the people” that support it. “We” welcome players from all ethnic origins to join as a player and a fan. “We” were the reason that owners built the stadiums, paid outrageous salaries so that not only would we be entertained, but provide needed revenue to the towns and businesses around this arena. The owners made these stadiums ‘our house’…..and if you can’t make peace with that…get the hell out and make room for someone that can!…..take old Roger with you!
