Watch: Joint Session of Congress to Certify the 2020 Electoral College Results – Day One: 1/6/21

The U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate convened in a joint session of Congress to observe the unsealing of the state’s electoral votes, hear objections and ultimately name the winner of the 2020 Presidential Election.

Objections to the results of several states are expected which will force the two chambers to convene in separate sessions to hear and hold an up-or-down vote on each objection. If either chamber votes down an objection, the objection is discarded and that state’s votes are counted.

Each objection will be given 2 hours of debate in each the House and Senate. The objectors have said that they could object to as many as seven state’s results which could delay certification by 2 or more days while objections are debated and voted upon.

The chambers broke into separate sessions to handle objections over Arizona’s vote. Shortly thereafter, protesters stormed Capitol Hill and forced the House and Senate into recess.

Sen. Joe Manchin, and Speaker Nancy Pelosi both said that they intend to finish the Electoral College Certification Wednesday night.

Just after 7:00 p.m. EST Wednesday, Congressional Republicans said that they are considering dropping their objections due to the Capitol Hill breach.

By late Wednesday, it had become clear. Joe Biden was set to officially be named President-elect. And, in the early hours of Thursday, January 7, 2021 it was so.
