Buttigieg Says Americans Should Buy Electric Cars So They ‘Never Have To Worry About Gas Prices Again’

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg suggested that Americans worried about increasing gasoline prices should purchase electric vehicles to save money.

Families that own an electric vehicle won’t ever have to worry about gasoline prices, Buttigieg told MSNBC in an interview Sunday. Americans who live in rural and urban areas would benefit most from buying an electric car since they currently spend so much at the pump, he said.

“Most of the physical infrastructure work was contemplated in the bill that was just signed, but there is more envisioned in the Build Back Better law,” the transportation secretary said during the interview. “It contains incentives to make it more affordable to buy an electric vehicle.”

“Up to a $12,500 discount, in effect, for families thinking about getting an EV,” he continued. “Families that once they own that EV will never have to worry about gas prices again.”

The $12,500 “discount” would be a tax credit under the Build Back Better Act, Democrats’ budget reconciliation package making its way through Congress. The credit would only be available for purchases of cars made by domestic union labor.

However, Democratic West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin has opposed the provision, arguing that not all electric vehicles should be eligible for the credit, according to Automotive News. Elon Musk, chief executive of Tesla, which isn’t unionized, in addition to foreign car manufacturers have also opposed the provision.

Gasoline prices, which are tied to the price of crude oil, have surged over the last several months, hitting multi-year highs, Energy Information Administration (EIA) data showed. Average nationwide gas prices were down slightly to $3.39 per gallon on Monday, according to AAA.

But the average cost of a new electric vehicle was $55,600 in 2019, nearly $20,000 more than the average price of all new cars, Quartz reported. Charging an electric car with a range of 200 miles costs about $9 and typically takes around eight hours.

Moreover, 60% of electricity generated in the U.S. originates from fossil fuel power plants, according to the EIA. Wind and solar account for 10% of the electricity produced nationwide.

President Joe Biden has stated that his administration will work to make the electric grid completely carbon-free by 2035.

  1. I work in the energy efficiency field in mexifornia. There is already an electrical generation crisis here and adding electric cars will truly exasperate the problem

  2. If these “Ecofreaks” would ever let the truth be known they will be shamed out of town. The craters dug out of the earth searching for the lithium and other materials necessary for these eco-friendly batteries are beyond belief! Old time coal strip mining is playing in a sandbox compared to these Lithium mines! Fossil fuel barely scratches the surface and nuclear is even cleaner. Don’t swallow (Like most liberals do) all the BS. Plus how are they going to charge the batteries? Solar Panels that are even more destructive and unrecyclable?

  3. So according to the buttwacker we should spend $50K to save a few bucks per fill up. Does he think electricity is free? What a self righteous moron.

  4. So this asshat moron thinks that we should all buy electric vehicles and stop complaining, huh? How about this instead, I’ll take a fully government subsidized and paid for Tesla as a gift from him and then bury all the hazardous waste as we have to replace the batteries in ten years at his house? And, by the way, let’s not forget that the same powerplants that used to operate on clean coal technology and now burn natural gas at will is where the power comes from to recharge that car. How much higher is your electricity today? Both coal and natural gas are fossil fuels and a few switchups in the number of hydrocarbons both emit when burned (high school science, remember?), the coal had clean technology that made their output nearly zero when the Obama and the Clintons killed the coal industry and made the natural gas fracking industry rich beyond belief. Remember who owns Haliburton. Furthermore, the infrastructure to pump, transport and store natural gas is a leaky sieve that emits millions of metric tons of methane into our atmosphere globally every year. Global warming? Oh yeah, we accellerated this process exponentially when the world switched to gas rather than coal. You see, sheeple are visual creatures. We see coal and its a dirty filthy solid substance that we don’t like. Natural gas is invisible. But, thinkers know that when you burn coal it turns into ash that can be used to make fertilizer. What goes up the stack is the same with both. Except, to get the same work/energy from gas you have to burn one hell of a lot more of it. I guess they didn’t mention that at the town halls. Want to save energy and money along with the environment? Go back to coal production, maximize the available clean coal technology and stop fracking and leaking natural gas into our atmosphere. We have an ass ton more coal deposits available without any special action to get it out of the ground. What has fracking done for communities? Poisoned drinking water aquifers, opened up new techtonic fault lines, and decreased the timeline for global warming to become the new normal.
