Campaign Of Selfishness And Accountability

Wednesday the House voted 230-195 to stop a $3.7 billion dollar bill to keep government running through November 18th. An odd pairing of Democrats and Tea Party Republicans helped to stop this bill from passing. Now, before you get to excited and think that the Democrats have seen the light… think again!

The Democrats were opposed to the bill because it contains cuts to a loan program that helps to manufacture non-gasoline powered and hybrid cars. Tea Party Republicans were opposed to the bill because it did not show that they were serious about cutting spending. Now, I understand that not passing this bill could potentially “shutdown” the government at the end of next week. However, I actually believe that this is a great time to discuss domestic and foreign aid funding as well a balanced budget.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is at the end of its rope to fund its aid efforts for victims of recent natural disasters as well as its ongoing support of infrastructure projects that fall under its wings here in the U.S. All the while we continue to fund many billions of dollars internationally on rebuilding, medical, food, and educational projects.

When do we say enough is enough? When do we cut off aid to other countries while we are unable to pay the interest on the debt that we currently owe? If you could not afford to pay your bills would you open a credit card to help others pay theirs? While this may come across cold hearted; these are the difficult choices that lay in front of us. It is time that we begin to make the selfish choice to help ourselves.

If we are once again to become the greatest nation ever known to man-kind we must first dig ourselves out of the crater that we find ourselves in. By being selfish on several key fronts including international aid we will be able to regain our footing.

I propose that we all start to mail BLANK check registers to congress. One by one they will begin to flow in until they are overwhelmed by them! They will certainly begin to get the picture that we expect them to start using these just as we must in our daily lives. We must send the message that when the balance is zero they can no longer spend.

So I ask you this: Who is ready to follow with me in a campaign of SELFISHNESS and ACCOUNTABILITY? My first check register is in my mailbox, is yours?
