What is the procedure for jaw surgery?

How to prepare for surgery?

In most cases, the orthodontist will apply braces to the teeth before surgery. Orthodontic instruments are usually placed 12 to 18 months before surgery and align the teeth for surgery.

Orthodox and maxillofacial surgeons worked together to create a treatment plan. X-rays, drawings, and tooth sampling are performed as part of the maxillary surgery plan. Reconstruction, crown, or both are sometimes needed to improve the way the teeth fit.

Three-dimensional computed tomography, computer-guided treatment planning, and temporary orthodontic holding devices help with tooth movement and reduce the wear time of orthodontic appliances. Sometimes these programs eliminate the need for jaw surgery.

Sometimes, virtual surgical planning is used to guide the surgery so that it can adjust and correct the position of the jaw section during the procedure so that it achieves the most optimal result. Maxillary surgery can be performed on the upper jaw, lower jaw, chin, or joint.

Upper jaw (maxillary osteotomy)

Surgery can be performed on the upper jaw to correct the following:

The upper jaw is mostly retracted

Dentition

Teeth show too much or too little

Decreasing facial growth between faces (hypoplasia of the middle third of the face)

The surgeon cuts the bone above the teeth so that the entire upper jaw, including the roof of the mouth and upper teeth, can go into one unit. The jaws and upper teeth move forward until the lower teeth are properly attached. Plans can be made on the computer to determine if additional work, such as orthodontics, is needed to correct the adjustment differences. Once the jaw is grasped, the bone is placed in its new position along with the plate and screws.

Lower jaw (jaw bone strength)

Significant osteoporosis can correct the following:

The lower jaw is withdrawn

Lower jaw care

The surgeon makes an incision in the back of the molar and along the jaw so that the jaw’s anterior part rotates into a unit. The jaw can be moved back or forth to its new position. During healing, the jaws are held together by plates and screws.

Chin Surgery (Genioplasty)

Genioplasty will cure a small chin. A short chin is often displayed with a deficient jaw.

Surgeries can usually replace the jaw and reconstruct the chin during a single operation. The surgeon cut a jaw bone in front of the jaw, moved it forward, and fixed it in a new position with a plate and screws.

Precautions after surgery:

After surgery, the doctor will give you instructions. These usually include:

What can you eat

Oral hygiene

Avoid tobacco

Avoid strenuous activities

Medications to control pain

You can return to work anytime, usually one to three weeks .Early jaw treatment typically takes six weeks after surgery, while full treatment can take up to 12 weeks .About six weeks after the initial jaw treatment, the orthodontist will align the teeth with the orthodontic devices. The entire orthodontic procedure, including surgery and orthodontic equipment, can take years. After removing conventional equipment, retainers can be used to maintain tooth location.
