UPDATE: Guatemalan Child Thought to Have Measles

YUMA, Ariz. – Following additional medical care, a Guatemalan national in the custody of Yuma Sector Border Patrol previously diagnosed with the measles underwent further testing and received corrected diagnoses of strep throat Thursday.

The 8-year-old child and her father were part of a group of 39 subjects who illegally crossed the Colorado River together at County 9th Street near Yuma.

The group surrendered to Border Patrol agents who determined them to be illegal aliens from Guatemala and Honduras.  They were transported to the Yuma Station for processing and medical screenings.

The child and her father were quarantined from the other detainees, and the Yuma County Health Department was notified per protocol.

Illegal entry into the U.S. poses a number of risks. The arduous journey poses real risks to life and safety. Migrants are encouraged to immigrate legally through ports of entry, and warned putting their lives into the hands of transnational criminal organizations who profit from human smuggling is a dangerous decision.

Yuma Sector is currently more than double its recommended detention capacity with more than 1000 illegal aliens in custody.  Most of those in custody are family groups and unaccompanied minors from Central America.
