Dialog or Disaster? The 20/20 Election Looms

We have not been this divided as a nation since before the Civil War. In 1858 Abraham Lincoln gave his famous House Divided Speech. In it he said, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” He went on to say, “I believe this government cannot endure, permanently, half slave and half free.” (https://www.ushistory.org/documents/housedivided.htm)  Sadly, events proved him right. However, most people don’t know what Lincoln said next and in that he was tragically wrong. He said, “I do not expect the Union to be dissolved; I do not expect the house to fall; but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing, or all the other.”

But the house did fall and the Union was dissolved. Four years of the bloody Civil War finally reunited the nation, but at a terrible cost. Today our division is not about slavery, but the passions on both sides are just as real. Will the nation endure half progressive and half traditional? Responsible dialog might resolve our issues, but it takes too sides to have such a dialog. You don’t have to be a divorce attorney to know that there are such things as irreconcilable differences. If both sides are certain they are right, challenging what the other side believes just makes them mad and then madder, and that is what we’ve seen in recent years. With no dialog there will be disaster.

That brings us to the 20/20 election. Tempers are already running high and will only get higher as the election draws closer. Whoever wins, half the nation will be outraged. What happens after the election will depend on who wins. Say Trump wins. Like antebellum abolitionists Progressives are certain the deplorable Trump supports are evil. Expect to see Antifa thugs violently demonstrating in our major cities. If you think blue state governments and Democrats in Congress, have refused to cooperate with President Trump’s agenda since his election in 2016, rest assured they will step up opposition even more. Massive strikes and disruptions are almost a certainty. If he wins again in 2020 and Congress remains divided or if the Democrats win the Senate nothing will get done, which might be a good thing if there weren’t so many problems that really need to be addressed.

If Democrats win, and depending on whom it is, Trump supporters are less likely to react violently, but they will certainly be angry and uncooperative at the very least. If Republicans keep the Senate or regain the House (Which is unlikely if Trump loses.) they won’t cooperate with the new Democrat President, and again important problems won’t be addressed. If, however, the Democrats win everything they are then able to implement more of their leftist policies an eventual confrontation with tradition Americans who support President Trump is pretty much inevitable. Whoever wins America is heading for tough times.

Could it be worse? Sure. Could things devolve into an actual civil war? The only way that would happen is if the military is split in their sympathies. During both of our civil wars, and yes Revolutionary War was also a civil war, neither side in either conflict had a massive military superiority. Our modern military has the capability to suppress any dissent. If Trump wins and the military follows orders it’s over for Progressives. If Democrats win and the military follow orders the same thing is true for traditional Americans. Whichever scenario unfolds it would be a disaster for our society. The only thing worse would be if the whole military or a portion of the military refused to follow orders. Then there could not only be fighting, there could be either a military takeover of our government or a government that rules via the military, not the wishes of its citizens. Is that possible? Of course it is. Rome was a republic for centuries. It didn’t end that way. As divided as we are there is no guarantee we will remain a Republic either.

What we need is reasonable dialog, but it doesn’t look likely that we will get much of that anytime soon. Progressive Democrats aren’t just convinced they are right, they believe those who disagree with them are evil. This is the kind of tunnel vision that allows members of Antifa to condemn those they disagree with as Fascists while they are oblivious to the reality that they are the ones behaving like Nazi brown shirts. It’s easy to justify your actions if the other side is irredeemable, racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic, deplorables. (https://time.com/4486502/hillary-clinton-basket-of-deplorables-transcript/ ) The left is quick to point out the sins of others, but ignore their portion of blame. Sure, there are people on the right whose rhetoric is inflammatory, but that doesn’t excuse a member of Congress calling any President a “mother***er” in public.

This doesn’t mean we just give up on the future. Try to talk to those who disagree with you. Many are too brainwashed by the media or our education system to listen, but some are open to rational discussion. Rational is the key. Many of the progressive positions are based on emotion, not logic. Some of what they want sounds good, until you get into the details of how it would work. Point out the details. Finally, there is the dishonest spin on many of their beliefs, especially those about President Trump. Point out that he never said all Mexicans are rapists, the reference to Russia releasing emails was a joke, not a request, and when he said are good people both sides in Charlottesville he was referring to those who wanted to honor the memory of their ancestors, not white supremacists. I’m not so naïve that I believe the truth will always be victorious, but at least put it out there when you have the chance. The alternative is worse.
