Waltz, a veteran Green Beret, has served in Afghanistan, the Middle East and Africa, according to WSJ. Since his election to Congress in 2019, Waltz has urged stronger European support for Ukraine and advocated for a more disciplined approach to U.S. aid, aligning with a major foreign policy objective of the president-elect.

Waltz had expressed his interest in joining the administration and was previously seen as a contender to lead the Pentagon, WSJ reported. During Trump’s first term, the role of national security advisor saw significant turnover.

Michael Flynn resigned after only weeks in the job amid scrutiny over contacts with Russia, followed by H.R. McMaster, John Bolton, and Robert O’Brien, WJS noted. Trump also tapped New York Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik to serve as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

Trump announced Sunday night that Tom Homan, former acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, will serve as “border czar” in his upcoming administration. Trump stated on Truth Social that Homan will oversee border security, deportation efforts, and manage northern, southern, maritime, and aviation security to strengthen immigration enforcement.

Trump also appointed former Republican New York Representative Lee Zeldin as the new administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Zeldin announced his appointment on X. He said he plans to restore U.S. energy dominance, revitalize the auto industry to boost American jobs and position the U.S. as a global leader in artificial intelligence, all while ensuring access to clean air and water.
