Vaping Popularity among Students

It’s no secret that more students are vaping now than ever. Over recent years, there have been widespread university bans that target vaping. However, vaping products are still prevalent in university bathroom stalls, libraries, dorm rooms, and classrooms.

Take a walk through college campuses and you will notice half-awake students heading to lecture halls in sweatpants. Others huddle together in readiness for exams with piles of books in the libraries. In most cases, their sounds and sights are largely enveloped by hazy vape clouds.

In libraries, classrooms, bathroom stalls, and dorm rooms, university students exhale fruity smoke puffs from compact best vape tanks. The fact that students are purchasing devices that enable them to vape discreetly with ease has contributed to the increasing popularity of vaping in learning institutions. What’s more, students can easily vape e-juices whose smell is hard to detect for both teachers and parents. Statistics on the Popularity of Vaping among Students

According to the U.S. National Estimates of adolescent nicotine use and vaping in 2017-2018, almost one in every six 10th graders is using electronic devices to vape. The number of students using tobacco in high school increased by 1.3 million from 2017 to 2018 due to nicotine vaping.

In another study, 37.3% of high school seniors reported that they had vaped in the previous year. With the number of students that are vaping on campuses increasing by the day, nicotine use is nearing epidemic levels. That’s because more teenagers are becoming nicotine addicts.

It is not surprising that universities are struggling to adapt. Today, more than 1,965 universities in the U.S have implemented regulations that prohibit the use of vaping devices like a vape tank from campuses.

Several universities are also updating their vaping policies, clamping down on students that vape, and providing resources that encourage vapers to stop. But, how effective are their measures?

Vaping is a Common Practice among Students

How extensive is vaping a problem among students? The answer to this question depends on the person you pose it to. Some students have complained that vapers blow huge smoke billows during lectures. To some parents, the onus is to a larger extent on professors and teachers to monitor vaping among students. However, this can be a challenge, especially when a class has hundreds of students. But, some professors have explicitly prohibited vaping in their classes.

However, this is not being done everywhere. Some professors know their students are vapers and do nothing about it. The best vape tank among students has a compact-size. This enables them to vape discreetly even in the presence of a lecturer in a classroom.

Currently, there is no shortage of stories about vaping among students. Nevertheless, there is a relatively sparse hard research on vaping among students. The American College Health Association released a National College Health Assessment that revealed that only 12.9% of students in college reported having used electronic cigarettes over the past month.

When the surveyed students were asked about the percentage of their friends they perceived as having smoked over the same period, the number went up to 79.9%. The researchers concluded that the inflated perception of the number of smoking students is also influencing the normalization of vaping among learners.

But regardless of what the figures say vaping is a common practice on campus. The presence of professors in large auditoriums may be a deterrent that dissuades some vapers. However, arms are raised and smoke starts blowing out the moment their watching eyes go.

Vapor Filled Libraries and Bathrooms

Many students leave lecture halls multiple times to vape in the bathroom stalls. Some college and university students have used the bathroom tactic from their high school days. However, some students are vaping in lectures as a stunt for others.

Many learners are also vaping in their school libraries. This is very common, especially during the finals week. And, though many universities know that students vape in their libraries, a majority of them are downplaying the issue. Others don’t believe that the issue is overwhelming. But, some universities have updated the no-smoking signage in their libraries about e-cigarettes and vaporizers.

Vaping is still attractive to students because small vaping devices are not easily detectible when used. Students are vaping in libraries, bathrooms, and classes while exhaling into their hoodies. And this tactic enables them to hide their use of vapes.

Students are also taking advantage of the fact that they can vape in classrooms without professors picking up on the odor. As long as students are in control of where their vapes go, their act is almost unnoticeable. And this poses a unique challenge to the universities.

The Challenge in Addressing the Vaping Issue among Students

Universities and students indeed have a discrepancy when it comes to describing the popularity of vaping on campuses. This can be explained by the fact some administrators and employees of universities may not identify vaping accurately. Additionally, a student vaper will mostly go for the best vape tank for flavor. Students are also smart in hiding their vapes.

Therefore, for learning institutions to address the vaping issue, they need to educate their staff and faculty on what to look for. On average, a restaurant or library employee doesn’t have an idea of what vaping is. And, some of the faculty members and professors that know what vaping is are also vapers.

Taking Actions

Some learning institutions are doing everything possible to promote healthy practices among students. The University of Texas, Ohio State University, and Michigan State University have, for instance, taken several steps towards combating vaping. For instance, these learning institutions have updated their non-smoking signage to include vapes and e-cigarettes. They have also declared described themselves as vape-free campuses. Others have security guards that patrol their premises for vapers and smokers.

Institutions like Skidmore College have banned tobacco products completely. The University of Michigan is offering nicotine cessation resources to students and the faculty free of charge. However, the furthest learning institutions can go in challenging vaping popularity among students, for now, is encouraging them to stop and updating their policies. That’s because they are not allowed to take punitive measures until they have evidence that the act will harm people.

The Bottom Line

Vaping popularity among students continues to rise. That’s because there are innovating vaping products and e-juices that enable learners to practice it discreetly. Faculties and administrators of some learning institutions are also not knowledgeable about vaping. What’s more, schools are not permitted to punish students unless they have evidence that their vaping will harm people. Thus, they can only encourage students to stop but not prevent or force them.
