Outrageous Law Prevents Visitors from Bringing Flags to Arlington Cemetery

The families of the war dead who were visiting Arlington National Cemetery on the Fourth of July to honor their memories were deprived of one thing thanks to a ridiculous law.

The American flag.

Via The Daily Caller “Bringing A Flag To Arlington Cemetery Can Get You One Year In Jail”:

Guests and family members flocking to the Arlington Cemetery this Independence Day will have to leave their America flags at home.

Current law does not permit people to bring American flags to grave sites after Congress passed legislation following protests from the Westboro Baptist Church at service members funerals, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.

Former Michigan GOP Rep. Mike Rogers helped pass the Respect For America’s Fallen Heroes Act in 2006, making it illegal to protest funerals within 300 feet of a cemetery. The legislation had the unintended consequence of barring the bringing of “any placard, banner, flag, or similar device.” Flags are permitted, however, if they are “part of a funeral, memorial service, or ceremony.”

Violating the law can bring penalties of up to a year in jail.

The justification for the law was directed at the late Reverend Fred Phelps whose whacko family church became a traveling freak show flying under the flag of “God Hates Fags” which didn’t prompt any such legislation.

Once Phelps and his gaggle of idiots began protesting the funerals of fallen American servicemen it became more of a visible issue as well as an exploitable one.

It was only when Congress was looking to score some cheap political points in an election year that it became a matter of grave importance to ban people bringing their own American flags to Arlington.

Former Congressman Mike Rogers concocted the “Respect for America’s Fallen Heroes Act” which was rapidly made into law just in time for Memorial Day back in 2006.

Rogers was one of the biggest fascists in Congress but he is now long gone and Reverend Phelps is worm food.

Instead of holding ridiculous and endless hearings into whacky Russian conspiracy theories it would seem that Congress should have prioritized getting this anti-American abomination rescinded prior to their leaving Washington for their latest extended break.

  1. Think big picture. Given the left’s hatred for the military, what’s to stop these malcontents from bringing ISIS flags or rainbow flags and planting them on these hallowed grounds? Yes, it’s a shame but isn’t it better this way than having the left desecrate the ground with their anti-American garbage? And you know, given the chance, they would.

  2. Scott has a good point, and not knowing the ‘reason’ I can understand how upset people are, My own parents were buried in Rosecrans National Cemetery.

There are 149 National Cemeteries within the US and 26 on foreign soil. Additionally numerous designated for Veterans in outlying areas. These sites are all UNIFORM with high standards of maintainence . The graves ALL have flags marking holidays. If every visitor brought a flag it would not only greatly increase the upkeep, and breakdown the pristine appearance, but require personnel to have to destroy them after the celebration….cost is one factor, just imagine how it would feel to destroy several thousand American Flags that represent a loved one.

It’s NOT an outrageous law….It is Military Code designed to ensure that lost loved one always have a well kept, beautiful final resting place surrounded by others that gave it all.
