Global Automaker Recalls 1.23 Million Trucks

A global manufacturer announced a voluntary recalling of 1.23 million Ram pickup trucks over concerns that the tailgate latching mechanism does not properly function, according to a Stellantis release.

Ram, owned by global automaker Stellantis, announced the recall following reports that the truck tailgates were malfunctioning and the latch mechanisms needed inspecting, according to the release. The automaker plans to inspect the tailgate striker alignment and will adjust it if necessary free of charge. Customers can expect to be notified around Jan. 27.

“We expect to begin sending notifications to affected customers on or about Jan. 27. The notifications will urge customers to make a service appointment with a dealer. Service will be provided free of charge, as is always the case with safety recall repairs. In other words, this campaign will be conducted in accordance with regulation,” Stellantis Media Relations Manager Eric Mayne told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Stellantis began the process of data collection to identify a defect in July of 2021, Mayne said. The majority of the trucks that will be recalled are in North America.

The recall will include the Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickups from 2019 to 2022, according to the release. While customers wait for the recall to begin, Stellantis recommends that Ram owners secure any cargo in their truck beds.

The recall does not apply to trucks with “multi-function tailgates,” the Ram 1500 Classic and any truck that uses sensors to alert the driver that the tailgate is not secure, according to the release.

In 2020, Italian-American carmaker Fiat Chrysler Automobiles merged with France’s Peugeot owner PSA to form Stellantis, according to Reuters. The companies combined after a $50 billion all-share deal, and created the world’s fourth largest automaker, bringing together Fiat, Jeep, Dodge, Ram, Maserati, Peugeot, Opel and DS.
