New York City saw a 20% increase in murders in November 2022 compared to the same month the previous year, according to newly-issued New York Police Department (NYPD) statistics.

There were 30 reported murders in the city last month, compared to 25 in November 2021, the preliminary data announced Monday shows. Reported rapes decreased by about 14.1%, while reported burglaries and grand larcenies went down by roughly 6% and 5.5% respectively.

Approximately 11.1% fewer NYC murders were committed from January and November 2022 than during the first eleven months of 2021, according to the statistics. Reported crime index offenses, which include several violent crimes and grand larceny, were 1.2% lower combined in November 2022 than during that month last year.

On Oct. 22, Democratic New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced a new task force to address public transit crime and a plan to establish 1,200 new overtime police shifts daily for subway stations and trains. November 2022 saw around 12.8% fewer major transit crimes in New York City than in November of the previous year, with the NYPD’s Monday press release referencing the Subway Safety Plan.

“The plan has surged more officers and resources into the transit system creating a visible presence on platforms and train cars and has involved train conductors, station attendants, and uniformed NYPD officers working together to communicate with, assist, and serve riders throughout the transit system,” the press release said.

The NYPD did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
