The Chiefs Quarterback grew up in Texas

Patrick Mahomes was born in Tyler, Texas on September 17, 1995. He attended the Whitehouse High School where He played football, basketball, and baseball. He was, in fact, a 3-star football recruit and a very good dual-threat quarterback in his class. The desire to play quarterback influenced Patrick Mahomes college decision.

One of Texas Tech’s Best Quarterbacks

Patrick Mahomes picked a college where he could play quarterback — Texas Tech. He first came to recognition as a freshman for Texas. During his freshman season, he completed 56.8% of his passes for 1,547 yards, 4 interceptions, and 16 touchdowns in 7 games. He also threw a Big 12 freshman record. When the Chiefs drafted him in the 1st round in 2017, he was considered one of, if not, the best QB to ever come out of Texas Tech.

He finished his collegiate career ranking among the greatest in Texas Tech’s program history. He finished 3rd in pass TD (93), pass yards (11,252); 2nd in TD responsible for (115); and 3rd in yards of total offense (12,097).

The Arm of a Warrior

During Mahomes’ pro day leading up to the 2017 NFL draft, he showcased his passing ability. Then, right after finishing what he was supposed to do, he had the moment of his life by throwing a near eighty-yard pass.

NFL Stats

Mahomes’ NFL stats are off to a blazing start. He continues to break records. In his first 3 games of the 2018 season, Mahomes set the record for most touchdowns thrown in the first 3-week of a season (13TDs), breaking the record previously held by Peyton Manning. He threw at least 4 touchdown passes in 5 of his first 8 games — the most in the Super Bowl era. He also has more pass yards (3,042) and pass TD (28) in his first 10 career games than any player since 1950.

On November 19, 2018, Patrick Mahomes threw for 6 touchdowns against the Los Angeles Rams. It was during the highest scoring Monday Night Football game of all time. Then, he finished the regular season with 50 pass TD, second only to Peyton Manning’s (55 pass TD).

NFL Greats

Through Mahomes’ incredible run in his first season as Chiefs QB, he’s earned praise from big names in the NFL. Bill Belichick, the head coach of New England Patriots, complimented Mahomes during his conference call ahead of his team’s matchup against the Chiefs. The former Green Bay Packers’ QB Bret Favre, who Patrick Mahomes has been compared to, also had high praise for him. Even Von Miller, one of NFL’s best pass rushers, praised Mahomes after he led the Chiefs to a win over his team.

An Early MVP Candidate

One game in Mahomes’ rookie season was enough for the Chiefs to put their faith in the young star and trade away the franchise QB in Smith — he was coming off his career-best season where he threw over 26 TD and 4,000 yards. And, the gamble paid off for the Chiefs through 5 games of the 2018 NFL season.

Mahomes led the Chiefs to a 5-0 start and found himself as the early MVP favorite. The second-year QB leads the league with 14 pass TD and has thrown for 1,513 yards.

An NFL product from Kliff Kingsbury

In Kliff Kingsbury’s short time as the head coach at Texas Tech, he’s produced some NFL quality QBs. Mahomes was one of 5 quarterbacks that Kingsbury helped move up to the NFL level, joining Davis Webb, Case Keenum, Nic Shimonek, and Johnny Manziel. Kingsbury still keeps up with his former QBs, praising Patrick Mahomes and his coach after a win over the LA Chargers.

Family and Sports

Mahomes is not the first pro athlete in his family. His father Pat Mahomes is a former MLB pitcher. Mahomes had 452 strikeouts in 308 appearances, 709 innings pitched, and a 42-39 record in 11 seasons. He had stints with the Minnesota Twins, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Texas Rangers. The younger Patrick Mahomes followed in his father’s footsteps. He played basketball in his youth and even played on Texas Tech’s baseball and football teams during his freshman year.

Froggish Voice

In sports, the leader of the team sometimes has a booming voice which resonates with their teammates and demands their respect. But not our Patrick Mahomes’ voice. He’s putting up MVP-type numbers for the Chiefs while his coach and teammates make fun of his “froggish” voice. It’s all jokes and fun between friends and family.

Conclusion

Mahomes is just two seasons into his NFL career, and he’s already the most important player in sports. Max Kellerman of ESPN also thinks the same, and he explained why during a recent episode of First Take. His age puts him in a unique position. One could debate whether he’s the right choice for that distinction or not, but it’s fair to admit that Patrick Mahomes deserves that label among players in the NFL.
