Cranky John McCain Accuses Rand Paul of Working for Putin

Dyspeptic old warmonger John McCain is unraveling at a quicker pace than normal these days.

The six-term senator may as well be a part of the Democratic Party given his Russian conspiracy mongering and hatred for President Donald Trump and maybe he secretly is.

The Arizonan snapped again on Wednesday by accusing fellow Republican senator Rand Paul of being an agent of Vladimir Putin which apparently means anyone who disagrees with McCain or supports Trump.

The unhinged outburst came after Senator Paul objected to McCain’s advocacy for Montenegro to join NATO.

In case Americans are wondering, Montenegro is a crappy little Balkan country that (according to the CIA World Factbook) is “slightly smaller than Connecticut” but McCain would gladly risk starting World War III over it.

According to The Hill “McCain: Rand Paul ‘working for Vladimir Putin’”:

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on Wednesday accused Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) of working for Russian President Vladimir Putin after he objected to a treaty related to Montenegro.

“He has no justification for his objection to having a small nation be part of NATO that is under assault from the Russians,” McCain said from the Senate floor.

“The senator from Kentucky is now working for Vladimir Putin.”

The flashpoint came after McCain asked for unanimous consent to set up a vote on a treaty on Montenegro joining NATO, but Paul objected.

Under the Senate’s rules, any one senator can object to a unanimous consent request.

McCain warned before he asked for consent that any senator who objected was “carrying out the desires and ambitions” of Putin.

In defense of Montenegro the scenery is absolutely stunning but there is no just defense of McCain who has become an embarrassment to not only the Senate but to the country as a whole.

It was the second time this week that McCain was in the news, he assumed his regular spot on the Sunday morning bloviation circuit to demand that Trump retract his explosive claim that Trump Tower was wiretapped by the Obama administration.

By now it’s pretty clear that the octogenarian McCain is losing his marbles and given his hair-trigger temper and bloodthirsty craving for war he doesn’t belong in any position of actual authority when it comes to U.S. foreign policy. The Senate would be well-served by stripping him of all but his duties as the senior senator for his own state and the media should stop enabling his madness.

He does far more damage than he does good and with the entire Beltway blazing with a new and toxic form of McCarthyism borne out of a hatred for Trump, his accusing his fellow senator of being an agent of a hostile power conjures up chilling images of the darkest days of the Cold War.

Senator McCain continues to be the strongest argument for term limits that exists today – and that is saying a lot.
