Dr. Omar Ibrahimi Creating Hope Through Laser Treatment

Laser treatment is used in a variety of cosmetic procedures— from helping to backtrack the signs of aging, treating acne and scarring to permanently removing unwanted body and facial hair. Laser treatment typically involves minimal discomfort and helps to enhance a client’s appearance and boost confidence.

Laser treatment requires extensive knowledge and should therefore only be conducted by a certified professional. The majority of today’s laser treatments on the skin were developed by dermatologists at Harvard Medical School. One of the most popular treatments is the Fraxel laser. Studies have stated that fractional laser treatment is an effective way to improve burn scars and that the use of fractional laser technology is the best option for treating acne scars. Studies have also noted that the results were better than those of traditional laser treatments.

While there are many spas and offices that provide laser treatments, it is imperative that the person administering the treatment is qualified and experienced to allow for maximum results and minimal adverse effects. Dr. Omar Ibrahimi of the Connecticut Skin Institute is an expert in the field and says, “One of the most common treatment options that I use is called the Fraxel laser. It is a fractionated laser that sends little micro-injuries into the skin. The injuries are so small and fractional that they trick the body into remodeling the acne scars and blending them. It often takes a series of treatments.”

What is Laser Therapy?

Fraxel laser treatment is designed to target signs of aging and damaged skin. The process is achieved by utilizing microscopic laser columns that work to penetrate deep into the skin tissue, and as a result, will expedite the body’s remodeling of collagen. It is important to remember that the laser only treats a fraction of tissue at a time, and by leaving the surrounding tissue intact you are, in fact, promoting rapid healing of the skin. The treatment works by resurfacing the skin and stimulating the growth of new and healthy skin cells from the body’s natural healing process. Essentially the treatment works by accelerating the skin’s natural turnover by acting as the catalyst for healthy cell production.

The Benefits of Laser Therapy?

Laser treatment comes with a wide host of benefits, both physically and emotionally. Physically patients will see smoother, fresher, and more youthful-looking skin as well as a vast improvement in the skin’s texture and tone. The appearance of unwanted brown spots, fine lines, wrinkles around the eyes, acne scars, and surgical scars are reduced as well.

While most people praise the physical benefits of the treatment, the pros are, in fact, skin deep. Skin facial scarring often comes with a knock to one’s self-confidence, and while it is important to embrace imperfections, laser treatments can help to enhance natural beauty and boost a patient’s self-confidence. So not only does it allow for an improvement in one’s skin, but it also provides overall improved quality of life.

Is Laser Therapy Safe and Painfree?

The term “No Pain. No Gain” is one that thankfully does not apply to laser therapy. The patient’s face is usually numbed during the procedure, so there may be mild to moderate discomfort at most. Many say that the sensation is equivalent to a slight “prickling,” “tingling,” and a feeling of heat.

Immediately after the treatment, patients often experience a sensation of “sunburn” but this disappears after a few hours. The downtime is often minimal, and patients generally experience redness, scaling, and peeling.

The FDA has approved Fraxel Lasers for the treatment of:

  • Acne scars
  • Actinic Keratoses
  • Age spots/sunspots
  • Melasma (asymmetrical patches of brown skin on the forehead, cheeks, upper lip, and nose)
  • Skin resurfacing
  • Surgical scars
  • Wrinkles around the eyes

Laser Treatment Aftercare

Sun protection is a must; while your skin is healing, it is best to avoid any exposure to UV rays as this could damage your skin (however, this is a rule that should always be followed).

Dr.Ibrahimi says that “it’s well established that UV radiation that is sufficient to cause a sunburn has done DNA damage to our skin cells. This is why you want to check for an SPF 30 or higher. Check that it is broad-spectrum, which means the product protects against both ultraviolet A and B radiation. It is important to check the ingredient list and make sure that the sunscreen you buy contains zinc or titanium dioxide because they physically block ultraviolet radiation. You also want it to contain avobenzone, oxybenzone, or another molecule known to block UVB radiation.”

It is also important to stay away from exfoliators during this time and to use a simple and gentle skincare routine.
